Ce projet a pour objet de concevoir une méthodologie permettant, sur la base d’un inventaire des caractéristiques du sous-sol et de critères socio-économiques, de proposer des solutions techniques intégrées pour le stockage du CO2 dans des formations géologiques sur le territoire français (on et off-shore).

The METSTOR project offers a methodology to look for potentially interesting CO2 storage areas in France at the initial stage, before the “site selection” step. That methodology is embodied in a Geographic Information System (GIS), which we are currently building. In addition to storage capacities, relevant information layers such as seismic risk, presence of faults, protected natural areas, existing wells, population density and other vulnerability factors will be included.

Our tool is based on an interactive map of CO2 storage capacities. It describes ‘effective capacities’ in both the Triassic and Dogger aquifers, some unexploited coal deposits, depleted fields, and basic and ultra-basic rocks. Effective capacities, according to the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum standards, are lower than theoretical capacities (because they account for some geological constraints on the available pore volume accessibility) but larger than practical capacities (because they do not account for injectivity variability and economic constraints).

Consideration of all the technical, social and environmental aspects of storage led us to complement the geographic layers with a series of online technical notices, because many aspects can not be mapped meaningfully. These notices include, for example, methods for both short-term and longterm risk assessments, descriptions of gas transport and injection technical solutions, methods to analyze acceptability.
To the best of our knowledge the METSTOR prototype is the first open online GIS that offers policy makers, businesses and the public at large an integrated access to that necessary information. Our prototype based on pre-existing data and limited mainly to the Paris Basin is to be released online.

METSTOR is a collaborative research project supported by the French Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME). Its consortium includes the institutes IFP, INERIS, CNRS, IPGP, Pau University, the companies Gaz de France and Géostock, under the coordination of the BRGM.
